My father was a Navy fighter pilot during World War II, and the first American to become an ace during a single mission, shooting down five planes in five minutes. He achieved the rank of captain before retiring to a life as a cowboy on his 4,200 acre ranch in northen New Mexico.

It was difficult act to follow for a son and though I didn't follow in his footsteps, I have done well enough in my career to realize that I, too, will be leaving big shoes for my children to fill.

"Big Shoes to Fill" is a tribute to my father and all those people who, through their accomplishments, have left an admirable example for others.--Steve Hanks
